Whether you’re coming in for a haircut, a fresh color, a blowout, a treatment, or a complete transformation, your stylist wants you to leave the salon feeling confident and happy with your hair.
The more your stylist knows about your hair, your history, your lifestyle, and what you actually want, the better they can serve you.
This becomes especially important when you’re visiting a stylist for the first time. Your stylist doesn’t have the benefit of knowing your hair history yet, so the information you provide during your consultation can make a significant difference in everything from the products they choose to the techniques they use.
So, before your next appointment, here are a few things your hairstylist wishes you knew.

9 Things Your Hairstylist Wants You to Know
1. Tell Us Everything You’ve Done to Your Hair
This is especially important when you’re seeing a stylist for the first time. Please don’t assume that something you did months or even years ago doesn’t matter.
If you’ve used box dye, gotten highlights, had your hair professionally colored, used an at-home lightening product, had a keratin or smoothing treatment, or chemically straightened or relaxed your hair, tell your stylist.
Even if the color has grown out, the hair itself may still contain the effects of those previous services. And if you’re not sure exactly what was used, that’s okay. Just tell your stylist what you remember.
For example:
“I had highlights about a year ago, but I don’t remember exactly what products were used.”
That’s much more helpful than leaving out the information because you’re unsure of the details.
Your stylist isn’t judging your hair history. They’re trying to understand it.
2. Tell Us What You Use at Home
Your professional hair history is only part of the picture. Your stylist may also want to know about your current at-home routine.
What shampoo and conditioner are you using? Do you use heat protectant? How frequently do you wash your hair? Do you use a flat iron, curling iron, blow dryer, or hot brush? Are you using oils, masks, leave-in treatments, or styling products?
You don’t need to bring your entire bathroom cabinet to your appointment, but knowing what you’re regularly putting on your hair can help your stylist make better recommendations.
This is particularly important if your hair is experiencing dryness, buildup, breakage, or difficulty holding color or style.
3. Bring Inspiration Photos—and Be Ready to Talk About Them
Photos are incredibly helpful. But rather than simply handing your stylist one picture and saying, “I want this,” talk about what you love about the photo.
Maybe it’s the color.
Maybe it’s the amount of dimension.
Maybe it’s the length.
Maybe you love the way the hair moves around the face.
Or maybe you simply like the overall feeling of the style.
These details help your stylist understand what you’re actually asking for. And remember: an inspiration photo is a starting point, not necessarily a blueprint.
Your hair may have a different texture, density, length, natural color, or history than the person in the photograph. Your stylist may need to adapt the look so that it works with your hair.
4. Tell Us What You Don’t Like, Too
Sometimes knowing what you don’t want is just as helpful as knowing what you do want.
Do you hate bangs?
Don’t want to lose more than an inch?
Don’t want a color that looks too warm?
Don’t want to spend an hour styling your hair every morning?
Tell us!
Your stylist isn’t going to be offended by your preferences. In fact, knowing your boundaries can help them create a result you’ll feel much more comfortable with.
Instead of saying only, “I want something different,” try explaining:
“I want something different, but I want to keep my length.”
Or:
“I want more dimension, but I don’t want a high-maintenance color.”
Those details give your stylist something concrete to work with.

5. Be Honest About Your Lifestyle
The perfect hairstyle isn’t necessarily the hairstyle that looks amazing in a photograph. It’s the hairstyle you can realistically live with.
If you wash your hair every day, tell your stylist.
If you air-dry your hair most of the time, tell us.
If you have five minutes to get ready in the morning, that’s important information.
If you’re willing to spend 30 minutes styling your hair every day, that’s important, too.
Your stylist can recommend a cut, color, or styling approach that fits your actual routine. Because there’s no point creating a beautiful hairstyle that you don’t have the time—or desire—to maintain.
6. Tell Us About Your Maintenance Expectations
This one is especially important for color services.
There is a big difference between:
“I don’t mind coming to the salon every six weeks.”
and
“I’d really like something that can grow out naturally for several months.”
Both are completely reasonable goals. They just call for different approaches.
The same applies to haircuts and styling. Your stylist needs to know how much maintenance you’re comfortable with so they can recommend something that fits your expectations.
A gorgeous, high-maintenance color isn’t necessarily the right choice for someone who wants to visit the salon twice a year.
7. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions
You are allowed to ask questions during your appointment! In fact, we want you to!
Not sure what a particular service involves? Ask.
Wondering how long the appointment will take? Ask.
Want to know how often you’ll need to come back? Ask.
Not sure how to recreate the style at home? Ask.
Wondering which products will help you maintain your results? Ask.
Your stylist is the professional, and part of that professional service is helping you understand what we’re doing and why.
A good consultation should feel like a conversation—not a one-sided decision.
8. Speak Up During Your Appointment
Finally, if something doesn’t feel right or you aren’t sure about something, **say something. **You don’t have to wait until the very end of your appointment.
If you’re unsure about the length before the haircut begins, talk to your stylist.
If you’re reconsidering the amount of color or dimension, bring it up during the consultation.
If you’re not sure how a particular styling technique is going to look, ask.
Communication throughout the appointment gives your stylist the opportunity to make adjustments and make sure you’re both working toward the same goal. Your stylist isn’t a mind reader—and you shouldn’t expect them to be.
The best salon experiences happen when the stylist and client work together.
9. Don’t Be Embarrassed About Your Hair
This might be the most important thing we want you to know. Your stylist has seen it all.
Overgrown roots? We’ve seen them.
Box color? We’ve seen it.
A DIY haircut that didn’t quite go according to plan? We’ve seen that, too.
Hair that hasn’t been washed in a few days? That’s part of the job.
You don’t need to apologize for your hair before you sit in the chair. Instead, give us the information we need and let us help you from there.
Our job isn’t to judge where your hair is today. Our job is to help you get where you want to go.

Great Hair Starts With a Great Conversation
The best salon appointment isn’t simply about the finished hairstyle. It’s about communication, trust, and collaboration between you and your stylist.
When you share your hair history, your goals, your preferences, your lifestyle, and your expectations, you’re giving your stylist the information they need to create a result that’s truly customized to you.
And sometimes, that conversation may lead to something you didn’t originally expect—a different color, a modified haircut, a longer timeline, or a recommendation to approach your goal gradually. That’s not your stylist ignoring what you asked for. That’s your stylist using their expertise to help you get the best possible result for your hair.
At NikkiCole’s Hair Design, we believe every great appointment starts with listening. Whether you’re a longtime client or visiting us for the first time, we’re here to understand your hair, answer your questions, and create a plan that works for you.
Ready for your next appointment? Bring your questions, bring your inspiration, and most importantly, bring your honest hair history. We’ll take it from there.
